I have been obsessed with the color yellow this summer. It started when I needed a new strap for my watch (BTW, the watch is my mom's. It's probably a gift from one of our relatives and I borrowed it indefinitely. read: forever!). Anyway, the original strap was a black patent crocodile leather but since it is missing one of the strap holders, I decided to hit the mall and have it re-strapped. I originally wanted a canvas strap instead of leather but the store did not carry it. So, I chose a yellow Italian Lizard strap.
When I am obsessed with something, I usually do a little research for it and here's what I discovered.
Yellow, in the English language, has been traditionally associated with cowardice. In American Slang, a coward can be said to be yellowbellied or yellowed. Ethnographically, the term yellow has been used as a slang term for Asians. In Italy, yellow (giallo) refers to real and fictional crime stories. This association began in about 1930, when the first series of crime novels published in Italy had yellow covers. There is a term called yellow movie which can refer to pornographic films in Chinese cultures. The ancient Mayans associated the color yellow with the direction of the South.
